Beauty Sickness is a disease we all have

The topic of beauty and plastic surgery came up in a sermon some weeks ago. And as I thought about it, I was surprised when I asked myself this question: what's wrong with it if it is required for your job, if you are a model or an actor or actress. Of course, it's not as simple as that.

Which is why when I saw this book on sale in Kindle, I got a copy and started reading it today. It's a good book.

Beauty Sick, How the Cultural Obsession with Appearance Hurts Girls and Women
by Renee Engeln. PhD

It does not talk about people where beauty is required for their profession, but it's about all of us--men included but especially for women--having this thing call beauty sickness.

Beauty sickness is what happens when women's emotional energy gets so bound up with what they see in the mirror that it becomes harder for them to see other aspects of their lives.

Beauty sickness is fed by a culture that focuses on women's appearance over anything else they might do or say or be. It's reinforced by the images we see and the words we use to describe ourselves and other women.

Englen gave a TEDx Talk and if you don't want to read the book, the talk pretty much sums up her message.

We all fall somewhere along the continuum of this sickness. None of us can extract ourselves out of it but we need to manage it and not let it take away too much of our cognitive resources or time or money which we can spend on other more useful stuff.

I must say I have been quite involved in my effort to lose weight but I dare say that I am doing it healthily (except I should add in this thing call exercise which is not yet in the picture).

But I did learn that our bodies is not for show but function. Our bodies are given by God and for us to care and nurture. Be kind to yourself, and don't objectify it and don't let others judge you. And most of all, don't put your voice into others to judge yourself. Other people have other problems of their own.

Ringing in the ears

I got to know about someone who can't sleep at night because of tinnitus or ringing in the ears. It must be a bad one if one can't sleep because of it.

Sadly, there is no cure yet for this condition and the only thing that may help is to listen to something else that will help cancel out the ringing.

The app I like best is Brain Wave, 32 Advanced Binaural Programs by Banzai Labs. If I need to get to sleep I'd listen the sound of rain, which gives a very comforting feel that helps me sleep. If I'm reading or at work, I'd either listen to the forest or the sound of a running brook.

But these days with Apple Music, my favourite songs work too.

Anything is better than constant ringing that won't go away.

No more carrots for me

Carrots are suppose to be good, right? Not necessary, it turned out.

I had a really bad tummy ache today. It felt like gastric pains and I thought it was because I skipped lunch. I had eaten a huge stick of carrot later in the afternoon. And after that my stomach was in so much pain.

I also had the same pain a week ago and it dawned on me that it was also after I ate a carrot. And so I started to search for an answer.

It seems now that I have an intolerance to too much fiber. Eating raw carrots can cause abdominal pains because "it’s common for some people to have difficulty digesting vegetables, such as carrots, which will cause excessive gas. Gas develops when certain carbohydrates remain undigested and interact with bacteria in your digestive system...If you don’t eat a high-fiber diet normally and you consume a large amount of raw carrots, you may develop stomach pain from suddenly increasing the amount of fiber in your diet."

Who would have known? I thought fiber is good for you but apparently not too much. So it looks like no more raw carrots for me, or any tough raw vegetables for that matter.

Check it out here for more information.

A Prayer for Caregivers

Today, my heart goes out to the caregivers of the elderly, of the sick. They live in fragile worlds, and yet they go on with strength and love. May the Lord bless them as they continue in their work of bringing care, help and comfort to the people who needs them.

Jesus said, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
~ Matthew 11:28-30

Our Father who love us so immeasurably
You are the Healer of souls
You are the Comforter of the weary
We abide in You your presence consoles
Help those who care for others
You are with them in their journey
Ease their anxiety and fears
Show them your grace and mercy
Surround them with love
Engulf them with strength
Uphold them as they uphold the others
Keep them strong yet gentle
For your love is patience
Your love is kind
It bears all things, endures all things
Your love never ends
Your peace you bestow them
Keeps them still at all times and in every way
And there you guard their hearts
And keep their minds in you, Lord Jesus

Amen
