Roman 16:1

I am to do a word study on diakonos found in Romans 16:1 for one of my Bible Interpretation assignments. Is it suppose to mean servant or a deaconess? What implications would there be if taken one or the other?

Romans 16:1
I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea.

Depends on who you ask :)

One's opinion on women in ministry/ leadership taints the interpretation of verses like these. I think that many on one (i.e. complementarian) side of this debate interpret the whole of scripture based on a few verses written in the Pauline epistles and gloss over the implications of where a verse like this might lead them.

  2. Ahh... I haven't thought of that :) I should have! Thanks KB, for reminding me. Now I can get into it with more vigour.

I have created a list of verses with the word and it is interesting to see how NASB varies it between minister and servant in all the verses. I have yet to compare it with the other versions.

  5. Pearlie - Thank you so much for signing my Guest Book. It meant a lot to me to have you on there :o) The comment is not to long to read when you click on the view guest book.

So you are one year older than my youngest!!! I am not surprised.

Marc was born blond and blond through most of childhood, as was I, but now his hair is brown. Don't know if you read my post about him or not. He is a single dad raising an 8 year old son and 12 year old daughter (he's been doing this for the past 14 months) and doing a grand job. We are very proud of him. He also holds down a very important job with the company where he has worked for 13 years.

Thanks for your kind comments, both on the Guest Book and on my 100th post.

    Your special to me:o)
