Wonderful Things of the World #12: Dark Chocolate

I buy this and keep it in my drawer for when I need a sugar fix, and since I don't want to take too much sugar, this will be the next best thing.

Wonderful Things of the World #12: Ramen

I haven't eaten ramen in a long time since I'm watching my diet but this Samyang Hot Chicken Ramen is my current favourite.

While ramen might have originated from China with its lamian or pulled noodles, instant noodles was apparently invented by Momofuku Ando of Nissin Foods in 1958.

I used to love Maggi Instant Noodle Asam Laksa. Still do. Just that I couldn't find that in the store today and so I bought a pack of Samyang instead.

Let me go to another store tomorrow to get me a pack of the asam laksa one. Yumm...

Wonderful Things of the World #11: Chicken 65

I was having lunch with a colleague and I ordered Chicken 65.

But we were wondering why it is called that.

Apparently the dish originated from Buhari Hotel, Chennai, India but nobody knows exactly why it's named Chicken 65.

Some say it's because it was created in year 1965. Some say it's because it contains 65 chili peppers. Some say it's made from 65-day old chickens. Others say the dish has 65 pieces of chicken. And yet others say it was the 65th item in the menu of the restaurant.

Whatever the story, it's absolutely yummy.

It's like spicy popcorn chicken without the batter, without the frying.

Wonderful Things of the World #10: Nitro Cold Brew

I still have not found out what exactly what kind of coffee this is. I keep telling people it's beer but coffee.

It's SO good.

Wonderful Things of the World #9: Gyuniku Negimaki

This is something I will always order when I'm in a Japanese sushi restaurant.

I was in Sushi Tei Midvalley today and I must say they serve one of the best I've ever tasted, not that I have been to many sushi restaurants nor have I been to Japan.

But hmm...it was utterly delicious.

Gyuniku Negimaki means beef spring onion roll. And is it true that it originated in Manhattan? Not in Japan but in a Japanese restaurant nonetheless? Interesting.

Wonderful Things of the World #8: Chile con Queso

I'm a Mexican food fan but I don't get the chance to eat it often. One of my favourites is queso with ground beef. Yummy...

Wonderful Things of the World #7: Loong Yuk Gon

Here is my 7th entry of what I think is one of the wonderful things of the world but I don’t know why so far they are all in the food category.

Books are wonderful too but I would blog them as book reviews.

Anyway, the Chinese New Year is fast approaching and it is only during the CNY that I allow myself to eat Loong Yuk Gon.

Its name in Cantonese obviously belies itself. Loong (dragon) Yuk (meat) Gon (dried/jerky) is of course no dragon meat. It’s pork and there is the chicken version too. Not too sure about beef though.

Which is your favourite?

We just bought some from Bee Cheng Hiang today, but my hubby likes those from Oloiya and my mom’s favourite is from Hock Seng Guan.

The reason why I’m limiting myself to have this only during the CNY is that even though it’s yummy, it’s not healthy.

But when are tasty stuff ever healthy?!

Wonderful Things of the World #6: Aglio Olio

My colleague recommended me to Le Pont Boulangerie at Old Klang Road and I went there with my parents and brother's family this evening.

The food was good, the alio aglio especially.

What is more delightful than a simple plate of pasta, garlic and olive oil.

Yummy.

Wonderful Things of the World #4: Pumpkin Seeds

Recently, I have been eating quite a lot of pumpkin seeds. They are tasty and they pack a punch of nutrients.

I got this list of benefits from care2 Healthy Living:

- Pumpkin seeds contain L-tryptophan, which helps promote sleep and fight depression.
- Tryptophan is converted into serotonin and niacin, which aids in sleeping.
- Pumpkin seeds contain phytosterols, compounds that that have been shown to reduce levels of LDL cholesterol.
- Pumpkin seeds are filled with lots of minerals including phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, iron and copper.
- They are a good source of vitamin K.
- High in zinc, pumpkin seeds are a natural protector against osteoporosis, since zinc deficiencies can lead to higher rates of osteoporosis.
- In a study of almost 400 men (age from 45-92) published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers found a correlation between low dietary intake of zinc, low blood levels of the trace mineral and osteoporosis at the hip and spine.
- Pumpkin seeds are a good source vitamin E; they contain about 35.10 mg of tocopherol per 100 g.
- They are the most alkaline-forming seed.
- Pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of vitamin B group (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B-6 and folates).
- 100 g of pumpkin seeds contains about 30 grams of protein.
- According to studies, pumpkin seeds prevent calcium oxalate kidney stone formation.
- Pumpkin seeds reduce inflammation and counter arthritis pain without the side effects of anti-inflammatory drugs.
- They are used in many cultures as a natural treatment for tapeworms and other parasites.
- Pumpkin seeds are good for prostate health.
- The oil in pumpkin seeds alleviates difficult urination that happens with an enlarged prostate.

Wonderful Things of the World #3: Dried Squid

I took a drive up north to Ipoh for a short stay with my parents, to spend some time with them and whilst we are at lunch today, my mom bought a packet of dried squids.

There are many kinds of dried squids but this is by far the best I've tasted. It's light in colour and in strips. It may not be so healthy but it's oh so yummy.

Wonderful Things of the World #2: Hakka Lui Cha

I joined my colleagues for vegetarian lunch today, although I don't really fancy Chinese vegetarian food. I went for the company and it was alright. But it reminded me of what I really feel like having, Hakka lui cha or thunder tea literally translated, though there are the vegetarian and non-vegetarian variety.

I especially like it because of the green colored broth packed with ground mint, basil and tea leaves. I can almost taste it now. My colleague, Teresa, who was also at the same vegetarian lunch, did tell me that her father-in-law makes it often at home. I'm still waiting for the invitation that sadly will never come.

So I found this article in The Malay Mail Online and I will surely check out those places for good servings of lui cha.

Wonderful things of the world #1: Forelle Pears

I would like to start a series called Wonderful Things of the World. It all began one afternoon some weeks ago when I was at the office. It was lunch time but I felt like just having fruits. So off I went to the grocery store and bought a Forelle pear. It was quite a sizable one and it was so yummy.

What a wonderful thing that God has made.

I was at the morning market today. I drove my son to college this morning and on the way back, I thought I'd find a place for a good breakfast, and ended up having a good stroll in the busy morning market in OUG.

And at the fruit stall, there it was: a whole pile of Forelle pears, and I bought ten. It was RM10 for five, but I felt five was too few. Ten was too many, but who's counting.
