Self-esteem vs. Pride

Is there a tight tension between self-esteem and pride? Would a person with a low self-esteem hang on to every strand of capability he has and come off being lofty and a person with a high self-esteem come off high and mighty even in areas that he has no capabilities in? How can one have a good balance and have both healthy self-esteem and pride so as not to spiral down to an inferiority complex or escalate to an I-am-better-than-thou attitude?

  1. Maybe a healthy expression of self-esteem is found in the idea of loving others as you love yourself. If loving yourself results in loving others than it is probably healthy.

  2. But what if a person does not even love himself?

  3. Knowing who you are in God's eyes, and that all you are is because of Him creates both self-esteem and a reason to remain humble.
Security from Him creates a sense of comfort in our own skin.
Low self-esteem.. that's tough, because that is a reflection of the treatment of others in the flesh to us; a manner of putting the opinions of man above the Love of the Father.

  4. Karen,
How absolutely true - "Knowing who you are in God's eyes, and that all you are is because of Him creates both self-esteem and a reason to remain humble" but still for me, I keep having to remind myself that, in some days more than ever.

"reflection of the treatment of others in the flesh to us.a manner of putting the opinions of man above the Love of the Father"
    Hmm ... how true ...

Thanks Karen :) these thoughts of yours are valuable to me.

  5. And Karen,
I have been contemplating to stop blogging in the past couple of weeks -- thanks for showing me I shouldn't.
