Don't we do it too?

Someone told me that in order for him to feel better at the bad turn of his life, he sometimes open up the newspaper to read news about the afflicted and the suffering, as consolation that his life isn't so bad after all. Why does this sound so wrong? And why does this sound so familiar? Don't we also do this to a certain degree, in smaller ways?

  1. I think that we get ourselves in trouble when we try to rationalize our pain away with talks of blessings and comparisons.

  2. Oh, I am so glad you referred me to your post. It is so true ... I am going to link it to on my main post and I am sure you don't mind.

It is exactly what I think too - and rationalising it at the expense of those suffering worse, how wrong can that be. We should instead dive in to help since we already acknowledged their worse condition and not to, God forbid, feel better.

Thanks for helping me work this out further.
