For thought

"You don't have a Soul. You are a Soul. You have a body."
~ C.S. Lewis

  1. Hi Pearlie!

I love C.S. Lewis but I disagree with him on this one.

    I am a Spirit.
I have a Soul - my mind, will & personality.
    I live in a body.

My Spirit and Soul will never die. They are eternal. My flesh )body) will die and rot and decay but I'll be given a new body.

We are triune beings, made in the image of God, who is a triune God, Father, Son & Holy Ghost.

The reason at age 69 I do not feel much older than I did when much younger is because my Spirit is eternal and doesn't age. Then I look in the mirror!!! and am reminded this body is dieing day by day.
    ((hugs))
    Susan

  2. This reminded me of that quote that goes we are not human beings having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience, and I didn't know CS Lewis said that but that's because he didn't.

  3. Susan,
    Interesting thoughts :)
And it is good to know that we have our eternal home with our Father in heaven and every line and wrinkle in our face is a step closer to Him ;)

  6. I so agree with this...very good. Our Spirit and Soul occupy this temporary vessel.

  7. I'm sure everyone has passed on from this thread, but Lewis was being very Platonic on this, and wrong. I'm with Susan, but even more so.

The body is good - fallen, and broken, and in need of restoration, but good. And it really is us. That's why life-after-death is a doctrine of all religions everywhere, but resurrection is a doctrine of Christianity. This body needs to be spring up like Christ's did, but it will and when it does we will see that we are 100% body, 100% soul, and 100% spirit.

  8. Jewels,

Your quote is by Teilhard de Chardin. Not surprisingly, I am thankful and even proud to be what God created me, a human being.

  9. I tried to find out where Lewis would have said that so I can get a context of it. Any idea?

I do not think Lewis meant the body to be bad or it would make it right to mutilate it. I like what you said Karen, that we are soul and spirit in a temporary vessel. But Codepoke's right too - I think I can say both is right. The body we have now is temporary and yet will be eternal when we are eschatologically resurrected in the Last Day.
