Why do I blog?

Alex blogged about "Six Reasons Why Pastors Should Blog". As I was reading it, I kept nodding my head and I keep telling myself, "Yes, yes, yes ..."

The article by Abraham Piper of Desiring God.org has succinctly put down reasons why I blog as well. I have encountered several individuals who at the moment of finding out that someone they know keeps a blog and updates it regularly, they'd throw their head and remark, "Don't they have anything else better to do?"

Thanks to Piper, here is why Pearlie blogs. So, listen up:

1. I recognise the value writing has for thinking. When I write, I delve into new ideas and new insights and sometimes discover things I would not have realised had I not write. When I write, I strive to think well.

2. Blogging has helped me in my discipline. I always tell others that the longest I have ever kept a journal was one week, or was it two? I am now into my second year of blogging and I am still disciplined enough to keep to a post a day: on things, thoughts or lessons that mark the day.

3. I had to quote Piper on this one: "For good or ill, most committed bloggers live with the constant question in their mind: Is this bloggable? This could become a neurosis, but I’ll put a positive spin on it: It nurtures a habit of looking for insight and wisdom and value in every situation, no matter how mundane. If you live life looking for what is worthwhile in every little thing, you will see more of what God has to teach you. And the more he teaches you, the more you can teach others. As you begin to be inspired and to collect ideas, you will find that the new things you’ve seen and learned enrich far more of your life than just your blog."

4. Blogging has connected me to many people, most of whom I think about at least once a day! They have enriched my thoughts, and my life, and I hope I have done the same to them. God bless you all!

And so, to all my blogger friends, blog away!

  1. I loved what you said Pearlie and agree 100%.

Initially I only had one blog (An Eye for Redemption) then I started a new one (Kansas Bob to blog about the simpler mundane and "non-spiritual" aspects of my world - it brought me some flexibility and a renewed desire to post a bit more frequently.. it also helped me to think through other things like politics and opine about movies and life in general.

I am off to check out Alex' post.

  2. Hmm ... maybe I should make another blog for the serious stuffs, and maintain the current one to yada-yada ... haha!! I have so many blogs before and deleted all of them. I was a "perfectionist" when it comes to what I should write in my blog then. It drove me crazy when the posts weren't consistent that I deleted each one of them ... (and to write this comment I have to preview it many times :P)

  3. I like reading blog but I hate writing blog as it requires some work in downloading pictures to make it interesting which requires lots of time. Honestly, I found difficulties in blogging as sometimes I just don't have any interesting pics and it takes lots of time. I prefer journal instead...that I have been writing consistently than blogging. And I realised blog doesn't last- one day when technology changed or the trend of blogging obselete or you don't have any access to internet anymore, the blog may be vanished and thus, waste away your efforts of blogging!!

  4. Pearlie - This is so awesome and true! Blogging with photography also makes me keep my eyes open and it connects our family as they all read it!

  5. Thanks Bob :)
I started reading An Eye for Redemption, but later I think I got addicted to Kansas Bob-the blog. haha ... I like to see your take on the ordinary stuff, though I do give the politic pieces a pass.

  6. Melissa,
I think you should just keep to one blog - I started with 2 also but I felt that I did not want to compartmentalise (plus the fact that it takes more time to maintain 2!) and I suppose it also show that I can be anyway I want - serious or when I just want to goof-off! :) But that is not being very consistent, eh? So, I suppose that is good practice too like what Kansas Bob is doing.

  7. Hi Chee Keat,
I have not been posting pictures lately unless I really want to - I suppose I got lazy :)

And in response, shall I say - to each his own. If you find personal journalling a better tool for you, then by all means stick to it. I wish I had that kind of discipline :)

I beg to differ though on your thoughts on blogging. I agree though that the internet is evolving big time but I think it is not so much a problem that blogging will be obsolete - I think it will stay but maybe not in the same form. New technology will come along and will make things more exciting and bring it up a higher plane. To me, the blog platform is a God-send to at least 3 kinds of people:

    1. Those who love to chatter about their lives, and they can go on and on about what they had for breakfast forever and ever
    2. Those who need a space to make their voice be heard - as we can see from our recent political scene
    3. Those who simple love to write on a subject or two that matters a lot to them

So it's ok that not all people fall into anty of the 3 categories above. And I don't think our efforts of blogging will be wasted :) As part of the 3rd category, a lot of thought has gone into it as I write and I have already drawn part of the fruits of blogging - a deeper sense of maturity of my mind and I can say that this should apply for all committed bloggers.

And even if you don't blog, thanks for reading :)

    God bless!

  8. Jewels,
Again, you are an excellent photographer - just that I can't be saying that all the time everytime you post pictures! haha ... unless you let me do it ;)
